This painting was inspired by one of the neatest mountain scenes that I got to experience in person. Mt Rainier is a sight to behold. It protrudes up toward the heavens and towers above its surroundings. When you look up, you have a feeling that if you climb up, you'd surely be able to touch the sky or even jump into a whole new universe from up there. On that bright September day, Rainier was veiled in the brightest, most beautiful colors that I've ever seen. The color palette was comprised of so many exquisit shades of reds, oranges, yellows, greens and brows contrasted with the deepest, brightest blue. It was a feast for the eyes. I could not decide if I enjoyed looking up at the mountain more or down at the unique blanket of fall colored flora and fauna. It was one of my most memorable mountain walks, one I look back on fondly. Just thinking about it makes me smile and feel giddy that I got to experience all that wonderment.

I might be releasing a limited time print of this one in the Fall, possibly in October.

Angle view of the painting showing the frame as well as the gloss of the varnish. This painting was so challenging to photograph, to really capture the feeling it gives off in person. This little angle shot captured it pretty nicely though.

I took this photo back in 2015 when I spent a month exploring the Pacific Northwest with my life partner Kyle. We actually spent most of that year on a cross country roadtrip teaching mosaic art classes across the US. We planned for a month off to enjoy this incredible pocket of nature's wonders.

Kyle and I hiked around the base of Rainier in total awe. No photos or words can truly express the grandeur of this place.

I loved painting this large piece and was so excited to see it beautifully framed by Kyle.

Above is one of my photos that I've used to design the composition of my Mt Rainier painting.

The mountain looked incredible from any direction with so many unique plants, bushed and trees framing it for many, many possible painting compositions. I'd love to explore another one in the future but more so, I'd love to revisit this place in real life and to just enjoy this incredible scenery in person.

An angle close up of the painting.

Another detail shot with a close up of the fall foliage of the shrubbery. This was one of my favorite sights.

The ground foliage was so full of color. I still remember its intense almost glowing appearance.

Here is the Mt Rainier painting right before getting crated for international shipping. It traveled to its new home all the way in Poland. The two smaller pieces traveled with it together.

Me and my son Wesley with our favorite, new painting prior to framing and crating for shipping to its forever home =)

And of course large artwork is lovingly packaged for shipping. This large one traveled abroad so we built a custom crate for it to ensure safe travels.

The Mountains Are Calling

Available for Sale:

This painting is inspired by the countless mountain vistas that have propelled me to keep getting outside to enjoy time in the mountains.

Often times the scenery can be so awe inspiring and so incredible that only the most skilled photographer will come remotely close to capturing that moment. I know that I’ve not been able to get that great sunset shot of the mesmerizing layers of fading mountains, an awe striking experience that so many of us have had.

I think one of the reasons we love this type of imagery so much is for that fleeting moment. Magic happens right in front of us and often it feels like we are the only ones seeing it, like the moment is just ours. I know that those moments are some of the most memorable for me.

I took some of those feelings and memories and used them to incite this painting into being. I hope that my imagery will awaken those feelings for some and be a reminder that magic does happen everyday, here all around us.

For me, creating this painting was an extraordinary experience in itself. I stared at the blank gessoed board, knowing that this blank canvas can become anything. I wondered whats inside of me worth sharing? But more interestingly, how will it come out? Will it be like what I imagined? That journey of searching and channeling my vision with my paints, my brushes and my markers - that was a journey to a place that I've never been. Discovery through action, the search, the mistakes, the surprises - all that in layers is one of the reasons I go to the studio to create and to watch the making of something that's never been.

Over the years, I've gravitated to creating mountainous, mosaic imagery in glass while revisiting photos of places that I really loved exploring. I take loads of photos while traveling, camping and hiking. Working from those has been a great joy for me. But with this painting, I embarked on just memories, I left the photos behind. That exhilarating journey to embark on, maybe a new chapter perhaps?

I love both glass mosaics as well as painting. I've began my journey as an artist as a painter. Eventually I found my way through working with stained glass. For over a decade I relished scoring and breaking glass, arranging them into abstract patterns that would emerge as landscapes. Today, I am once again drawn to mark making with paint and line. I approached this painting very freely without expectations. I just wanted to have fun, to explore. I was surprised to see what developed in front of me. I just ran with a certain feeling of the mountains and enjoyed this wonderful, colorful voyage.

Lotus Emerges - A Ceramic Tile Sculpture

Lotus Emerges, a handmade sculpture with handmade ceramic tiles, 4'5" by 4' by 6",  2021

Above photo shows the sculpture installed on Main Street in Alamosa, Colorado. It is part of the 2021/22 Artscape Sculpture Program. Vote for your favorite art via the city website here: https://cityofalamosa.org/public-art/public-art-archive-2021-2022/

The lotus is an exquisite flower that easily captivates whomever casts their eyes upon it. In nature it emerges from muddy, murky waters to bloom into a perfectly clean flower. Because of this it has come to symbolize purity and has become a much loved symbol of beauty in various cultures, all having a somewhat different interpretation.

Above are the renderings for my sculpture proposal prior to it being completed.

What I love about this flower is that it follows the cycle of light, opening up during the day and closing at night – rebirth is a symbol that I am particularly drawn to. The lotus flower inspires me to begin each day fresh and clean. Furthermore, it is a sign of enlightenment – breaking through the darkness. I love looking back on the times when I broke through the darkness inside, learned something new about life around me or about myself. For me the lotus is a beautiful reminder of the potential we have when we open up to the light.”

The sculptural form is built from plywood, white foam, mesh and is covered in exterior foam coat from the Hotwire Foam Factory.

There is a custom-made steel base inserted into the center of the sculptural form. It is in there permanently.

I created all of the unique ceramic tiles in my studio. I hand rolled the clay, cut out each shape and added patterns to each tile by hand before the bisque fire. Then I glazed all the tiles. I love the final part, opening the kiln for the grand reveal of the completed tiles.

Here I am laying out the first set of tiles on top of my blueprint for the pattern.

This was my favorite of the tiles for the first side of the sculpture.

It was so exciting to see one side of the sculpture ready for gluing.

Here are the tiles for the second side of the sculpture. After the first firing, I didn't like the way some of the tiles turned out so I had to reglaze some of these. It was well worth it as I loved they way they came out on the second go around.

I loved examining each tile and arranging it into my pattern.

These bigger shapes were my favorite on this side. The whimsical, organic feel of them was mesmerizing to me.

On the left, I am holding the tile and on the right you can see the tile installed onto the sculpture which is grouted in that photo.

On the left is my son Ethan, inspecting my layout before I glue down each tile. On the right, I am inspection from above after I glued all the pieces down, making sure that all the spacing feels right.

Here I am with the finished sculpture with Side B facing forward. All the tiles have been glued and the mosaic has been grouted.

After finishing the sculpture, I decided that this was the Side A of the sculpture. It was a difficult choice as I love both sides, plus originally, the other side was intended to be Side A. But I was drawn to the vibrant blue hue of the tiles on this side. That's what swayed me to choose this as the primary side, if there needed to be one. But the sculpture is 2 sided and intended for both to be equally enjoyed by the viewers. Further more, the circular cutouts encourage the viewers to look forward, through the sculpture, as if they are looking toward a brighter future.

Glowing Moonrise - Painting

Glowing Moonrise

This painting was inspired by a moonrise that is lit up by the setting sun in the mountains, not any particular moonrise but many that I've enjoyed over the years. Most often, when it comes to one place, one set of mountains, I've seen the full moon rise from behind the Sangre de Cristo Mountains seen from the Mystic Valley Sculpture Park that I am building with my partner Kyle.

In the late Fall, Winter and early Spring, when the sun sets early, it helps to create one of my favorite phenomenons in nature. In the late afternoon/early evening, the sun sets in the West just as the moon rises in the East and this helps to give the moon a brighter hue, sometimes pink. In Mosca, Colorado in my sculpture park, this is particularly fun to watch because the moon rises from behind the mountains. If those mountains are sprinkled with snow, the effect is further amplified. The subtle pink, blues and violets are so calming and beautiful to watch, despite the extreme chill in the air.  The sky is so big and full of beauty there and during these type of evenings it really grabs you.

This is something that I've also enjoyed in other parts of Colorado and beyond, not just at my sculpture park. But those moments just stand out the most right now because I get to enjoy them often, something I feel very fortunate for. Photographing those images never translates to the actual experience. That's what motivated me to try my hand at painting that magic.

Blue Mountain Sunset - Painting

Blue Mountain Sunset
 acrylic on board, 35”x35”x2”, 2021
Available for Purchase:

This painting is inspired by the many years that I’ve spent in the mountains all across the United States. It is a tribute to countless sunsets that can’t really be captured in photos.

I’ve compiled memories of my favorite moments where the mountains become layers of blue while the setting sun creates a bright, colorful expression in the above sky.

All of this is a fleeting moment but powerful. It has propelled me to to keep coming back to the mountains for a chance to catch something remotely similar, even if just for those few magical minutes.

While painting, I aimed to bring focus to the 3 main layers of my composition: the trees in the foreground, the mountain layers in the middle-ground and the sky in the background. Often times, one of these parts of the vista can easily steal all our attention. But during that short time so much magic can happen. I worked to show as much of that as possible.

The effect of this painting is not easy to capture in photos. If you'd like to see a video of it while considering a purchase, please email kpolkowska@gmail.com The details and the gloss varnish is much more apparent in a moving image.

 Wintery Moonrise
acrylic painting with acrylic markers and black ink on board

8″x6″x3/4″ 2021

Winter is quickly approaching in many parts of the US. Over the last month, I’ve been watching dustings of snow gather on the nearby mountain peaks here in Colorado. I’ve been feeling the chill in the air. I’ve been daydreaming of admiring the prestine scenes of the beautiful, white Rockies. I’ve also been seeing incredible moon-rises, emerging from behind the mountains. So I sat down in the studio and put these fun impressions together and this little painting emerged. I hope that someone connects with this scene as much as I do or maybe more =)

If you’ve been to the Blue Ridge Mountains, you’ve experienced the Magic. I’ve been lucky enough to hike these mountains throughout the various states that they span. I’ve quietly walked past a mama bear with two cubs, hiked the tall peaks, walked the forest floors, admired the endless vistas from the many lookouts along the Blue Ridge Highway and camped along some of the prettiest spots I’ve ever seen there.

I have not been back for over 6 years now but the impressions and memories I’ve taken away with me comeback often and I hope to go back soon. There is enough for a lifetime of exploration, inspiration and just plain wonder at the beauty of this part of the country.

This is that Wow type of sunset =) You know what I mean if you’ve seen one for yourself. We always hope to see that bright, vibrant pink sky at sunset but a lot of times they sky offers a more subtle type of beauty. Sometimes though when all the the components are present, there is an explosion of color above. That was my driving force behind this brand new painting.

The mountains are starting to be veiled in shadow, though you can still make out a lot of the rocky lines and shapes. The trees are beginning to blend in with the further away mountains but when you look intently, you can still see them standing on their own. But most of all, the sky commands your attention as you stand there realizing how just how lucky you are to be there at this moment, seeing what could be a once-in-a-lifetime moment, not knowing if you will ever see anything like it again or at least not anytime soon. I’ve had those moments and wanted to try my hand at capturing it in paint.

If the atmosphere in the mountains is just right, the effect can be mystical. The scenery can feel almost other worldly. I find that this is true for me when I see the sinking fog in the mountains. The high peeks are peeking from a light blanket of moisture. The feeling is so mysterious and a bit eerie. It always makes me think of fairytales.

In my painting it is dusk and the fog just rolled in. The full moon is rising and lighting up the landscape below. This creates a dim kind of light where the colors feel like they are fading away into the night yet there is a sort of light that highlights the main features of the vista.

Winter’s Night, acrylic on board, 18”x18″, 2021
Available For Purchase: https://www.kasiapolkowskashop.com/product/winters-night/

I've been living in Colorado since the beginning of 2012. Over the years, I have seen many beautiful snowy mountain scenes. Colorado is a true winter wonderland, a truly magical place when the Rocky Mountains are veiled in fresh snow. I've also lived in areas where the night sky is pretty spectacular. With this new painting I wanted to combine some of my favorite aspects of experiencing Winter in the mountains.  I hope that this painting inspires people to venture outside even when it may be bitterly cold out there. I know that's what I am hoping for myself =)

The painting is varnished in gloss on both the face and along all the wooden edges which have a painted accent strip.

My paintings are created with layers of acrylic wash. The various layers create wonderful color changes through out. On top, I use acrylic paint markers of varied thicknesses to draw patterns and lines to help my landscape come a live. There is a hanging wire as well as a certificate of authenticity on the back.

Violet Wintry Night, acrylic on board, 6″x8″, 2021
Available for Purchase:

This painting is part of my new mini series where I explored the concept of remote mountainous places where on a clear night the sky is filled with infinite stars. In this piece, I explored a scene where the atmosphere is purple and violet.

I’ve only seen something like this in real life one time while camping in Zion National Park. The Night sky was violet  and pinkish. The sky looked very light but the milky way was so clearly visible – it was so magical. The surrounding landscape also seemed lit up which was so neat. In this little painting I wanted to express some of that phenomenon but in a more mountainous and wintry scene.

Polar Night, acrylic on board, 8″x6″, 2021 ~SOLD

This painting is inspired by the idea polar nights. I’ve not actually experienced this incredible phenomenon where night lasts 24 hours but I’ve been fascinated by it.

I sleep right next to a window where I see a beautiful, full night sky most nights. Here in Pagosa Springs, Colorado the nightly display of stars is awe inspiring. I live on the border of the national forest and each time it snows, the scenery out that window is pretty magical. It makes my mind wonder about what the nights are in other, faraway remote places.

There is a draft by my window so the cold chill has recently made me think of frozen, bitterly cold spots. I painted this new scene thinking of arctic places where its so cold that icebergs grow out of the sea creating a fairy tale image of winter in the mountains where surely an ice queen must be nearby.

Frosty Winter Night, acrylic on board, 6″x8″, 2021 ~SOLD

In this piece, I explore really jagged, snowy peaks that shoot up from the colorful forest, straight into a crystal clear and very cosmic night scene.

This image was inspired by a spectacular sunset I got to enjoy at the terminus of a short hike through the woods to an edge of the Grand Canyon that sees much less traffic then the more readily accessible lookouts. Over the years, I’ve gotten to enjoy hiking and viewing the Grand Canyon from various vantage points, from both the South and the North Rims as well as from the very popular and highly visited lookouts as well as more remote locations like Shoshone Point.

No matter where along the canyon, the views were always incredible, whether at crowded lookouts full of other admirers or at less traveled locations. A sunset that I got to watch at Shoshone Point during my first trip to this area was one of the most memorable.

Along with a few friends, we set out to walked about a mile through the woods to a more secluded spot, perfect for sunset viewing according to my research. All of a sudden we were startled by a huge, lone elk who a moment ago seemed like he was a still tree but in a flash turned into an antlered keeper of the woods. He stared us down while having his evening snack. We were not sure if we were supposed to proceed or turn back but decided to quietly, press on. Arriving at the stunning edge of the canyon felt extra special, almost like we passed a mystical guardian of this special palace and that he chose to allow us to see the magic beyond.

The evening was perfectly still. The changes in color of the canyon walls and the sky above were subtle but powerful. The layers of the Grand Canyon seemed to dance in the slight foggy mist that softened the brightness of the setting sun. Anywhere I looked, I was seeing something I’ve never imagined could exist. I was looking at infinity yet it felt so fleeting as the vibrant colors quickly began to disappear for the day with the fading light. We knew that the longer we’d stay out there, the darker the woods would be on the return walk back to the car. All of this felt so precious. I took away an image of the brightest part of the sunset and tried to share it in this new painting. I hope that the magic and wonder that I got to witness and absorb out there comes through for the viewers and that it reminds them of time spent in the outdoors and of their own magic that they have experienced during moments as special as the one I had at Shoshone Point.

My stained glass mosaic 'Shoshone Point' circa 2010

Additionally, I'd like to share my other inspiration for this new painting, a mosaic that I created back in 2010. It was inspired by the same sunset from the same spot along the Grand Canyon. I loved that memory as well as my mosaic interpretation of it and now that I am focusing on painting, I wanted to create a painted version to once again try to show the beauty of this very special place.
The painting photographed outside in the bright sunlight prior to it being varnished.

The painting photographed outside in overcast atmosphere following being varnished.

A closer look.
Another closer look toward the painted sky.
Here I caught a fun reflection as the sun began to peek out from the clouds and reflected the trees into my painting.
The same reflection capture from a different angle.
The painting seen from a similar angle but with a much lesser reflection that still shows the gloss of the varnish.

The painting is currently being framed in a black hardwood floating frame which will add an inch of size all around totaling at 25″x49″. Please email kpolkowska@gmail.com if you’d like to see a video of the painting.

Mystical Snowy Night in the Mountains
acrylic on board varnished in satin
34″x46″ (36″x48″ framed)
2022

I live in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. The pristine wilderness of these mountains is awe inspiring anytime of the year. But in the Winter, when the snow blankets these Rocky Mountains, the scenery is Mystical. The mountains look immaculate, untouched, frigid yet breathtakingly beautiful and full of mystery. The skies here are filled with what seems like an infinite numbers of stars shinning brightly on a clear night.

With my painting, I wanted to share the type of enchantment that you get filled with in childhood when you see something spectacular. Here in Colorado the scenery can bring an adult back to that place back in time when the world seemed full of Magic and Mystery. All of that is still here, tucked away in the mountains.

This painting is inspired by a pretty spectacular sunrise that I witnessed near Cascade, Montana. It was in the Summer of 2015 during the wildfire season. There were fires burning in the near by mountains and forests.
