Wintry Mountain Sunset

Wintry Mountain Sunset, acrylic on board, 23"X23" (24"x24" framed in a black floating frame - photos coming soon), 2023

Available: https://www.kasiapolkowskashop.com/product/wintry-mountain-sunset-24x24-framed/

This is painting inspired by Winter in the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado where I live. I love when the snowy conditions create beautifully soft colors on the mountains. When the sun begins to set, the snow covered mountains can briefly appear to be a spectacular shades of blue. Set against the brightly colored sky, the mountains look magical.

Wintry Night Sky Symphony

Wintry Night Sky Symphony, acrylic on board, 24"x14" (25"x15" framed), 2023

Every night that I go to bed, I look out my window toward the cosmos. Its not exactly intentional. I've never been a particularly cosmic person, growing up in Warsaw, Poland and then in the NJ suburbs and finally New York City in my early adulthood, I wasn't exposed to the magnificence of the night sky on a regular basis. As I became immersed in the great outdoors in my early adulthood, I got to enjoy the night sky more and more.

Today, I live on the boarder of the National Forest in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. My bed is right next to a window that exposes the nightly display of stars or the moon to me on a nightly basis. Its a unique experience for me to look out toward the universe before checking out for the night. It fills me with wonder and awe. I look out toward the trees and know that the Weminuche Wilderness is just a bit beyond there. It is the largest wilderness area in Colorado and is filled with what seems like an infinite layer of mountains. The sky out there is beyond magical. I think of all of this each night, of the mystery, the endless beauty and wonder out in those mountains, much of which happens at night while we all sleep in our homes. These days, I am more drawn to the mysteries and beauty of the night sky and that is more and more present in my art.

Northern Rocky Mountain Night I, acrylic on board, 8″x16″x1.5″, 2023

Both the paintings in this post were nspired by wintry, star-filled nights that are present in the more remote Northern Rocky Mountains

The painting is varnished in satin, has a signed certificate of authenticity on the back as well as a hanging wire.

In the following painting, I was a little more bold in adding some more dramatic pinks to the composition as I dreamed up visiting the Northern Alaskan Rockies <3

In both the paintings in this post, I worked to create a unique scene inspired by various ways that the colors pink and lavender can be seen in nature while thinking of Winter. I’ve once seen a beautifully pinkish, violet night sky filled with incredible stars. I stood under it and wondered at the sight, ‘How could the sky feel pinkish at night? Magic!’. I’ve seen snow capped peaks appear a glowing pink due to the illusion created by the suns setting and rising rays. And I’ve seen evergreens draped in that beautifully colored hue as well. Winter provides unique opportunities for enjoying brief moments of spectacular colors. With my painting I wanted to capture that by combining various real inspirations into a fantastical landscape from my dreams.
The painting below is inspired by the same concept at the Rose Colored one but with keeping Lavender shades as the driving inspiration for the color palette.

Beaming Mountain Sunsets

Beaming Mountain Sunset I, acrylic on board, 12″x9″x1.5″, 2023 ~SOLD

Both of the paintings I shared in this post were inspired by a beaming, setting sun in the mountains. The atmosphere is just right to intensify all the colors and momentarily make the landscape feel like its ablaze with warmth and color, creating a nearly unreal landscape. Yet those who spend a lot of time in the mountains may have been lucky enough to witness such a phenomenon. And if you have not seen a similar scene in person, I hope that it inspires you to seek it out.

Often when I paint, I enjoy exploring colors and compositions in groups. This allows me to paint more freely and to let the ideas and inspiration overflow onto an extra substrate, or if I am feeling particularly full of inspiration, it may be more. I loved painting these new vivid vistas and hope to find some time to dive back into these colors soon!

Beaming Mountain Sunset III, acrylic on board, 10″x8″x1.5″, 2023

This painting is inspired by a beaming, setting sun in the mountains. I love that brief magic hour when the colors of the landscape become more intense and vivid. The atmosphere is just right to intensify all the hues, not just in the sky but in the landscape itself. Its as if someone came by and pointed a magic wand at the view and said 'Be bright and magical but make it quick!' Momentarily the landscape feels like its ablaze with warmth and color, creating a nearly unreal landscape. Yet those who spend a lot of time in the mountains may have been lucky enough to witness such a phenomenon. And if you have not seen a similar scene in person, I hope that it inspires you to seek it out.

The painting is varnished in satin, has a signed certificate of authenticity on the back as well as a hanging wire. It is painted on a deep 1.5″ artist board that has a painted accent stripe and is varnished just like the front of the painting. It does not need to be framed for display but if the buyer prefers framed art, the painting is a standard size so sourcing a frame should not be too challenging.

This painting is inspired by Summer nights in the Rocky Mountains. Right around the Summer Solstice,  the weather warms up in the high country, the meadows green up and begin to be blanketed by colorful wildflowers. The surrounding mountains are lush and green and full of life. Add a moonless night with clear skies and the sky can be filled with more stars than there are wild flowers in the meadows. I wanted to create a magical, little painting that seems to be bursting with color and mystic found in remote wilderness.

This painting is inspired by a beaming, setting sun in the mountains. I strove to express the unique ambience of that brief magic hour when the colors of the landscape become more intense and vivid. Sometimes some hues seem to only last minutes, maybe less. But they sure make an impression that can often last a lifetime. The atmosphere is just right to intensify all the hues, not just in the sky but in the landscape itself. Its as if someone came by and pointed a magic wand at the view and said ‘Be bright and magical but make it quick!’ Momentarily the landscape feels like its ablaze with warmth and color, creating a nearly unreal scenery.

Available: https://www.kasiapolkowskashop.com/product/beaming-mountain-sunrise-i/

This painting is inspired by the vivid atmosphere of a colorfully rising sun in the mountains. From my experience, sunrises seem to be more often subtle so when I catch one that is so bright and magical I know its going to be a special day. For me its an extra treat to witness the brilliantly colored pinks and oranges creating a gentle gradient while a beaming, momentarily pink sun rises quickly from behind the mountains, creating this transient effect.  I love that brief moment when the colors of the landscape become saturated with color after a long night – the mountains change seemingly having no color to having various shades of blue – it is such a lovely sight to see, as fleeting as it may be.

The painting is varnished in satin, has a signed certificate of authenticity on the back as well as a hanging wire. It is painted on a deep 1.5″ artist board that has a painted accent stripe and is varnished just like the front of the painting. I painted this night sky painting for my sister Gosia. We wanted her to come along on a recent Tucson Road Trip with us but she couldn’t make it this time around. So in good spirit we brought her painting with us and it did some sightseeing for her, then we shipped it to her from Arizona. The painting enjoyed a lovely sunset among the Saguaros and even camped with us, then it traveled all the way to New Jersey where it now had a loving home.

Autumn Enchantment Paintings

Do you often find yourself daydreaming of Fall Magic? I find that each year, Autumn gifts me with the most beautiful views, unique colors and atmospheres, especially when the sun lights up the golden trees and its fading light creates a never before seen pattern in the sky.

I took the above photo while camping at Twin Lakes, Colorado - one of my favorite spots for fall foliage enjoyment. I love exploring the area as well as just sitting back and taking in these kind of views. Each year's visit is a gift and I always see something new. These photos are from September of 2022 when many of the aspens were peaking in brilliantly warm hues. The yellows gleamed, with hints of orange and the start of the leaves getting a little bit crispy and turning brown before they start dropping to the ground, ending the years' color extravaganza which I look forward to all year and am never disappointed.

With these two Autumn mountain vistas, currently on SALE: https://www.kasiapolkowskashop.com/product-category/paintings-drawings/ , I strove to create an enchanting mountain atmosphere of sunsets/sunrises during the peek fall foliage seen in the surrounding foothills. I take inspiration from magical moments like the evening at Twin Lakes where I caught glimpses of the soft, gentle pinks and yellow accents in the fading light blue sky before darkness sets in.

Another photos from the same camping trip at Twin Lakes near the foot of Colorado's tallest peak, Mt Elbert.

Autumn Mountain Vista Paintings

As the Summer began nearing an end my excitement for Autumn began to grow, I embarked on a new series of landscapes - my 2022 Autumn Collection. Having lived in Colorado for over a decade now, I've gathered enough inspiration for a lifetime. It was time to put some of that to work!

I set out to paint and the colorful vistas began to pour out of me. It was incredible to see all these scenes come together. I drew on so many beautiful memories from camping and hiking trips around the state. I've only started to paint again about 2 years ago so this was my first official series. I could not be happier with how it turned out.

Bloom III Coming to Carbondale, Colorado

My new sculpture Bloom III has been accepted to the 2023/24 Art Around Town in Carbondale, Colorado.  It is part of my growing sculpture series 'Bloom' which is rooted in the intricate folk art of paper cutting from Poland, my place of birth. With each of my flowers,  I want to share the wonder that these forms inspire in me, hoping that each one can do the same for others. The bright colors and fun, bulbous shapes are made to be eye catching, grabbing the viewer and pulling them in for a moment, adding something unique to their day out on the town.  With all my sculpture I aim to add beauty and interest to new places where the passerby can feel uplifted, inspired and discover something new.

I've participated in Carbondale's outdoor art a couple of times in the past. Below are two of my other sculptures that have been displayed in the colorful, eclectic mountain town.

Johna-Mai won the People's Choice Award during the 2018-19 exhibit. It was installed infront of the Lauchpad - a space for the arts. Then the following year, my sculpture Reflection of Inner-self was displayed in front of the Carbondale Public Library.

The Bloom Series Sculptures

Many people recognize me as an artist for my 2d mosaic landscape work as well as my outdoor mosaic sculpture as I have been creating and teaching mosaic art since 2007. In the last couple of years, I picked up the paintbrush after a 15 year break from the medium and today painting has once again become the main focus of my creative life. Still, I create large outdoor sculpture as my secondary passion and have expanded from beyond mosaics to large, welded steel forms. These works are exhibited each year in juried annual art exhibits though out Colorado as well as permanently installed in the 40 acre sculpture park I am building near the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Below is a peak at my new series of sculpture called 'Bloom'.

The series 'Bloom' is rooted in the intricate folk art of paper cutting from Poland, my place of birth. With 'Bloom III', I wanted to share the wonder that these forms inspire in me, hoping that the sculpture can do the same for others. The bright colors and fun, bulbous shapes are made to be eye catching, grabbing the viewer and pulling them in for a moment, adding something unique to their day out on the town. (Contact kpolkowska@gmail.com to order a custom 7.5ft tall flower sculpture or a set)

For all of my art across the mediums I love exploring, I take inspiration from what I find most beautiful in my surroundings as well as my life experiences. With my sculptures I aim to add beauty and interest to new places where the passerby can feel uplifted, inspired and discover something new. Above and below are two examples of my hand made mosaic sculpture - both are permanently installed at Mystic Valley Sculpture Park in Colorado - a collaborative art project with my life partner Kyle.
