Clearing Amid the Clouds, acrylic on board, 16″x24″ framed , 2022

Available: https://www.kasiapolkowskashop.com/product/clearing-amid-the-clouds-16x24-framed/

Autumn is the time of year when the senses are often heightened. Clinging onto color and life is a human instinct. A looming storm, can further intensify this feeling as it also has the power to make the landscape seem richer than in does in the bright sunlight that often blow outs the rich colors of the earth. So for this painting, I let my imagination really flow and reconnected with my inner-child, wanting to express the big, bald characteristics of approaching weather in a magical place, a place that is actually close to home as it is inspired by the local San Juan Mountains near Pagosa Springs, Colorado where I live. In the sky, I created a clearing, something you often see during the passing storms. The sky between the clouds is not quiet peaceful in appearance – the series of lines in the sky are almost like a message sent between clouds that are trying to figure out, ‘Should we thunder, or should we call it a day?’.

Nautilus Shell Sculpture

On September 17th, 2022 the Alamosa Public Works Crew installed my new sculpture Nautilus Shell. It is located on the corner of Main Street and State Street. This is the 6th year that I've participated in Alamosa's Artscape Outdoor Art Sculpture, each year from the start of the program.

Here are my boys Ethan and Wesley, waiting for the installation of the pedestal for my sculpture.  The sculpture that was here previously was very large so the crew removed the standard pedestals that are always there for the new work. They had to bring it back and set it in place as my sculpture looks best when raised a couple of feet.

Alamosa's Public Works Crew is always a pleasure to work with and lots of fun to watch as they carefully install all the art around town.

Kyle and the boys watching in awe =)

The Chambered Nautilus, sometimes referred to as a living fossil, has remained relatively unchanged for over 400 million years. Most people recognize it for its shell which captivates with its geometric and jewel-like beauty. Its appeal has been driving this previously abundant species toward extinction through over-harvesting for jewelry production. It is easy to want one of these mysterious and mesmerizing treasures for oneself, especially when the true cost to the species is not realized or advertised by the trinket producers. I hope that others are inspired like me to only take inspiration from the living Nautilus and to leave them in the deep, dark ocean where they can thrive for millions of years to come.

Each year I design a brand new sculpture specifically as next year's submission entry for the jury to consider. This was the concept that my partner Kyle helped me realize via Solid Works.

There is a neat contrast between the colorful glass front of the sculpture and the back that is made to look like stone.

Here is a photo of how I realized the back of the sculpture to appear like in the concept design. It is sculpted polystyrene foam, covered in mesh and layers of exterior foam coat that is then faux finished with exterior paint and sealed.

I completed my Nautilus Shell a few months before the installation of the 2022/23 Artscape. For a few months we installed it at our 40 Acre Mystic Valley Sculpture Park in Mosca near the Great Sand Dunes National Park.

The front is created with hand cut and shaped stained glass. Some of the glass is irredescent so it changes color in the light.

Here you can see a size comparison as well as how the colors changed when sculpture is viewed from a different angle.

Lotus Emerges at Mystic Valley Sculpture Park

My ceramic sculpture "Lotus Emerges" has just been installed at our 40 Acre Mystic Valley Sculpture Park in Mosca, Colorado near the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Last year it was installed for the Annual Outdoor Art Exhibit 'Artscape' in nearby Alamosa - the central city of the San Luis Valley. To see photos of it in town as well as photos of the making of the sculpture check out my post from last year: The Making of Lotus Emerges Sculpture

Pulling the sculpture via a cart to its new permanent location in the sculpture park that Kyle and I have been building for the last 4 years.

Kyle prepping the pedestal for installation.

The sculpture is double sided, so here Ethan and Kyle were modeling the sides for me to choose from to pick the best orientation.

Kyle rotating the sculpture before securing it in place.

Teamwork!

Bloom Sculpture Installation

With my art, I take inspiration from what I find most beautiful in my surroundings as well as my life experiences. With my sculptures I aim to add beauty and interest to new places where the passerby can feel uplifted, inspired and discover something new.

My sculpture "Bloom" is rooted in the intricate folk art of paper cutting from Poland, my place of birth. With 'Bloom', I wanted to share the wonder that these forms inspire in me, hoping that the sculpture can do the same for others. The bright colors and fun, bulbous shapes are made to be eye catching, grabbing the viewer and pulling them in for a moment, adding something unique to their day out on the town.

On October 4th we installed 'Bloom' for Aurora's 11th Biennial Art 2C On Havana Street 2022-2024. See my sculpture featured via Aurora TV here: https://onhavanastreet.com/aurora-tv-featured-the-2022-2024-art-2c-on-havana-street-public-art-program/

Art 2C On Havana Street is a Public Art Program that features outdoor sculpture from Colorado Artists as well as creatives from beyond the Rocky Mountain State. This was the first time I applied for the program and was so happy to be chose as the handful of artists who shared their wonderful creations with the greater Denver audience.

"Ethan's Starry Mountain Vista", acrylic on board, 23"x23" (24"x24" framed), 2022 NFS

I don’t take commissions for paintings so what you see is what you get with me as far as available art goes. But a couple of weeks ago my son Ethan came by the studio, picked up a board and said ‘I want you to paint me something on this board similar to that one’ pointing to a Winter scene hanging in my studio. Below is that particular painting.

"Mystical Snowy Night in the Mountains", acrylic on board, 36"x48" framed, 2022
Available: https://www.kasiapolkowskashop.com/product/winters-mountain-magic/

So for his then upcoming 5th birthday,  I set out to work on his ‘commission’ 😂  Note, this is only something I'd do for one of my kids, as mentioned above, I don't do commissioned paintings. See currently available art here: https://www.kasiapolkowskashop.com/product-category/paintings-drawings/
This was a perfect way to kick off my Winter series! While I painted, Ethan came by to check up on me and says ‘This one will not be available Mama!’ 💙 He’s pretty slick 😎 And yes, it’s all for you sweetie!I love how the finished painting looks so big against his 5 year old child frame. I hope that as he grows he will keep enjoying this gift and one day share it with his own kids in his adult home.
This year for Halloweeen, Kyle, I, Ethan and our younger son Wesley all got astronaut costumes so Ethan was ready for blast of and to model his new gift. He often offers to hold my finished work for me so it only made sense that we properly document him receiving his very own new art =)

October has been pretty cosmic for sure! Our little family of 4 dressed the part for a better part of October, including in the above photo for Pagosa Springs Halloween in the Park on the 29th of October.

Above is the painting in an earlier stage.
Next you can see some of the lines being added to the trees and the build up layers for the milkyway.
Here I added the lines and highlights to the mountain tops.Things are coming along, its feeling pretty snowy!

Almost there and ready for Ethan to add some finishing touches.
Ethan got to add some of the milkyway layering with mommy's help =)
And he got to add some stars too! Here he is again ready for blast off!

Crisp Autumn Day, acrylic on board, 46″x34″ (48″x36″framed), 2022
Available for Sale: https://www.kasiapolkowskashop.com/product/crisp-autumn-day-48x36-coming-soon/

This painting is inspired by the countless awe inspiring Autumn days spent in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado where I live. Starting in mid September and going till mid October, I love taking roadtrips across the Rocky Mountain State. This is when I get to take in Mother Natures's Color Show on camping and hiking trips with my family. With this painting, I tried to express the collective beauty of the season, the vivid aspens, the dramatic mountains, our perfect Colorado sky and just the overall grandeur of nature that you can sense while taking in the incredible vistas. This is the last painting of my Autumn series and will keep me going till next September!

The painting is framed in a thick hardwood painted black gallery style floating frame. It has a signed certificate of authenticity on the back as well as a hanging wire for easy display.

Due to the large nature of this painting and the detailed line-work, it is good to take a look at angle and detail shots to get the best sense of how it feels t look at it in person, face to face with the art.

The Story Behind the Printed Image

A few weeks before his 5th birthday, my son Ethan came down to my art studio. He was looking around at the newly prepped substrates for future paintings. Then he picked one up, looked up, pointed to a large night sky painting hanging on the wall and said "Paint me something like that on this board, please." I chuckled at his request, well it was more of a demand, I think. I thought to myself, sweetie but mommy doesn't take commissions lol But for him, of course I was going to make an exception =) I took the board and said that I'll have it ready for his upcoming birthday. And he said GOOD, but this one will NOT be available.

I coulnd't believe how cleaver he was but I was also honored that he wanted me to make him something special <3 After I shared the process of this painting coming alive and then the final images of it, a lot of folks responded with the sweetest birthday wishes for Ethans, sending him good cheers from near and far. Some folks told me that its their favorite painting that I've created thus far. I will guess that that is because I put a lot of love into it and worked to add extra magic and beauty for him, hoping that he'll always enjoy his painting as he grows into a young man who will hopefully keep loving nature and the outdoors as much as he does today.

Autumn Crescent Moon, acrylic on board, 24″x48″, 2022
Available: https://www.kasiapolkowskashop.com/product/autumn-crescent-moon/

As the Summer began nearing an end my excitement for Autumn began to grow, I embarked on a new series of landscapes - my 2022 Autumn Collection. Having lived in Colorado for over a decade now, I've gathered enough inspiration for a lifetime. It was time to put some of that to work!

I set out to paint and the colorful vistas began to pour out of me. It was incredible to see all these scenes come together. I drew on so many beautiful memories from camping and hiking trips around the state. I've only started to paint again about 2 years ago so this was my first official series. I could not be happier with how it turned out.

If you are browsing my blog, please let me know which Autumn Landscape is your favorite? I'd love to see what people are drawn to and why if you'd like to share - thank you for looking! I hope you have all had a beautiful Autumn filled with wonderful imagery, smells and warm treats.

My Autumn Art Sale will be coming to a closing this month, later in November. Some of these are still available for purchase which can be set up via my custom monthly payment plan and shipped internationally: https://www.kasiapolkowskashop.com/product-category/paintings-drawings/ Email any questions to kpolkowska@gmail.com

Its been a few years since I released my last print sale. So for this Holiday Season, I decided to go all out and currently have 4 Limited Time Options Available. All prints will be shipping in the beginning of December and once they sell out, I don't have a planned future date for adding new print options. Below is the latest addition to the Art Shop "Cascade Canyon" newly released as a 10"x20" giclee print.

Print Specs

  • This is an Archival Giclee Print signed by the Artist.
  • The Open Edition Print will be available for a Limited Time
  • It is 11″ by 21″ (actual printed image size is 10″ by 20″ with a 1/2″ white border all around – this border is typically covered by the mat of the frame though a frame with no mat can work really nicely as well – if you are unsure about what frame to order, its a good idea to wait till you receive the print.)
  • It is printed with archival inks on high quality matte paper.

This new print is based of what may be my all time favorite and special mosaic seen below with me for a sense of scale. The hand cut stained glass mosaic measured 24"x48" plus the outer hard wood frame. Next you can see the mosaic in a little more detail.

Next I'd like to share some of the inspiration behind this mosaics. It was all gathered on foot on an overnight backpacking trip in the backcountry of the Grand Teton National Park.

In July of 2012,  Kyle and I hiked the Canyon/Paintbrush Loop where the mountain views were spectacular, especially from our backcountry campsite in the Northern section of Cascade Canyon near Lake Solitude.

Everything was so lush and green, the wild flowers were blossoming everywhere – the blue and yellow ones stood out to me the most but the reds and pinks were equally impressive.  A thunderstorm was brewing as we arrived at our campsite so we held our breath as it roared.

Following the storm a thick fog rose from the ground to fully cover the tall peaks and decrease visibility of the scenery.  Just as we watched it rise, we watched the fog fall back to the ground and reveal the spectacular scenery back to us.

The fog kept coming and going until it fully dispersed at sunset and we got to enjoy watching the mountains be bathed in the bright light.

We observed the marmots and the picas and even saw an antelope run across the meadow.  We fished in the lake, listened to the creek run past our camp as we enjoyed our supper and we slept under the stars.

This was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited and used a variety of views and aspects that I’ve photographed to design a scene which I hoped would convey all that I loved about it.

Upon returning home to Boulder, I knew that I had to imortalize this experience in a stained glass mosaic. I did a series of pencil and colored sketches and blew one up to a larger scale and dived right into choosing my glass for what would become my most labor intensive 2d mosaic project.

Then, one by one, I began cutting and arranging the thousands of pieces of glass.

I worked to jam pack this landscape with lots of fun details and textures, really wanting to push myself artistically and to create some thing really special that would reflect the magic and awe inspiring wilderness that I was so lucky to enjoy and explore.

And ofcoure, things got really tiny and really, really slow going. But I had a pretty grand vision for this and it really was a true labor of love. I look back on this mosaic and really don't imagine that I'll ever have the same amount of free time to work on something of this sort as I did in my more carefree 20s and when I was able to work for 12 hours some days, standing the whole time and cutting, tiny intricate shapes that my hands are no longer interested in doing. There is a time and a place for everything. Today, I fondly look back on this mosaic and am very happy and excited to share it as a print with those who have enjoyed my mountainous mosaic landscapes.

I look back on some of the photos of me on this hike, like the one below and then the one above of my hands holding a hand shaped glass circle the size of about 1/8" and it makes me remember why I worked so hard to squeeze in all these tiny pieces of glass into my composition. When I looked down on the surrounding landscape from above, I felt like each healthy, large tree could be meticulously lifted with two fingers, each boulder was a pebble and snow packs were just miniature snowballs =) I love the changing sense of scale while hiking and exploring mountainous landscapes on foot. "Cascade Canyon" for me was a monumental feat and is forever a priceless memory and a reminder of my youth.

Below, is another framing/matting concept for the print. It is not so sharp as I pulled it of my preferred online framing shop. I wasn't 100% sure about releasing "Cascade Canyon" as I did just add 3 other Limited Time Prints to my Art Shop for the Holidays. But while on an Epic Roadtrip in New Mexico last week, seeing our van against the Organ Mountains helped me make the decision =) It will be available to anyone who reserves it this week.

Can you tell that I LOVE this mosaic image?!? A sticker of "Cascade Canyon" has been on the side of our van for the last 7 years! We installed it back in 2015, while on the Kasia Mosaics US Tour. Maybe you've seen it while we were traveling the country and teaching mosaic art classes? I can't believe its been so long already. We met so many wonderful folks around the country and were hosted by amazing people. Its an unforgettable experience ❤

Colorado Central Cover Art

I am pleased to share that my painting "Celestial Mountain Night" has been chosen to be the cover art for the December issue of Colorado Central Magazine.  This is a regional magazine that aims to 'help to build a sense of place, a regional community, and a local culture in Central Colorado and the San Luis Valley. We have subscribers throughout Colorado, New Mexico, the U.S. and even overseas.

I painted "Celestial Mountain Night" earlier in October for my son's 5th birthday so it being on the cover of a magazine that covers the region where he was born was an added bonus for us. Actually both my sons were born at SLV Health in Alamosa.

As you can see both boys were excited to see a familiar image on the cover of this interesting and informative magazine. Just flipping through the pages, you can see that there is a lot of unique, original content. I'm really looking forward to reading each article.

Well, they got a little too excited a bit too quickly but thankfully no magazines were hurt in the process =)

If you turn to page 4, you will find a photo of me with one of my glass mosaic landscapes inspired by the most prominent mountain in the San Luis Valley, that is a beloved regional landmark seen from practically every part of the valley. On this page you can read a little bit about me and my artwork.

If you'd like to pick up a copy locally, buy an annual subscription or order a copy of the December issue with my artwork as the cover, click this link to see where and how you can do so:  https://coloradocentralmagazine.com/where-to-buy/

Hand Painted Christmas Ornaments

This Holiday Season, I painted my first set of Christmas Ornaments. I created six and am so happy that they all sold soon after I released them. They are all traveling across the country to their new loving homes in Virginia, New York State, Michigan, New Jersey and New York City.

Stay tuned for more ornaments in 2023! I hope to create another set, hopefully in November =) I know that's pretty far in the distant future.

This fun little project is more of a unique way for me to create miniature, affordable art to share with my audience, rather than something that I can sustain creating on a regular basis. Its a way for me to connect to folks who care about my art and what I do - my way to share my work on a more accessible scale. The bonus of that, with this particular project, is that these small round landscapes make perfect ornaments, though they can hang on a wall year round in a non-Christmas celebrating home. They are perfect tiny accents for a special nook of a room, adding a bit of nature's magic.

Crystal Winter Morning, acrylic on board, 14"x24", 2022

In this new painting, I strove to convey the pristine, breathtaking look of Winter in Colorado. Its been snowing here in Pagosa Springs where I live and I felt particularly inspired. Sometimes I look out the window at the snowy wonderland and admire the beauty while at the same time, I am fascinated by how cold the season can get and I'm comforted by all the warm, cozy blankets around me =) Sometimes it feel like you can almost see the crystals forming in the air around you. I kept that thought in my mind while I painted and wanted to capture the fidget yet beautiful feeling of Winter.

Better photos as well as photos of the framed painting coming soon!

I first came up with this idea 2+ years ago, when I started noticing more and more sweaters, jackets and dinosaur costumes being thrown around the house – something that is a given with 2 little kids and us going in and out of the house 20 times a day in the constantly changing Colorado mountain weather.

A wall mounted coat hanger was what we needed but I couldn’t find one I liked enough to hang in a prominent part of our house, so I took matters into my own hands, transforming a typically simple but very essential and functional object into an artpiece that expresses something about me – my love of mountains and bright colors. Today we have 3 of these hanging at home and I don’t feel bad about having all these wacky outfits hanging on the wall because they are accompanied by art that I love.
